Completion of our Skills Training, Engagement and Practice for Success (STEPS) program is required to become a regular volunteer at Columbus Humane.
STEPS consists of 16 hours of classroom learning about the fundamentals of caring for animals as well as the mission and philosophies of our organization, as well as 4-6 hours of mentored learning if animal care is involved. Invitations for classes will be sent out via email 3 weeks prior to a class start date, following the submission of an application. Inclusion in the program is not a guarantee with application submission.

The STEPS program is proudly sponsored by Schoedinger Pet Services. Thanks to their support, each STEPS class participant receives a training manual, photo ID badge and volunteer t-shirt. We ask all incoming volunteers to make a one-time mission investment of $30. All participants choose a program area to receive their personal investment.
(An application for an Adult Volunteer Partner must be completed with Junior Application)
ARE THERE ANY REQUIREMENTS TO VOLUNTEER?
Volunteers must be at least 16 years of age to volunteer independently. Junior Volunteers, ages 12-16 years old, may volunteer with an Adult Volunteer Partner over the age of 21. All must attend STEPS training and accompany Junior Volunteers must be accompanied at all times while volunteering at the shelter by their Adult Volunteer Partner. Volunteers who are ages 16-17 may volunteer on their own with a submitted "Junior and Teen Waiver and Release."
WHAT IF I NEED SERVICE HOURS FOR A SCHOOL OR COMMUNITY PROJECT?
We have a special track available for those looking to fill hours for a school or community project, tailored to the amount of hours that the volunteer wants to spend with the organization. Please complete the Service Hours application so we can figure out the best way to meet your needs and create the best experience possible. Court ordered service hours cannot be fulfilled at this location.

Saturday - Sunday 12pm - 5pm

Appointments are available from 11am-6pm M-F and 9am-4pm Sat-Sun. Same day appointments may be available. The entrance to the Animal Support Center is located at the side of the building. Call (614) 777 - 7387 for an appointment.
