Nearly 80 Guinea Pigs. One Call for Help. A Community That Said Yes.

Recently, an elderly community member reached out to Columbus Humane asking for help. What began as a small number of guinea pigs in her care had, over the course of two years, grown into nearly 80 animals, many of them pregnant.

She cherished her guinea pigs as members of her family and had always gone above and beyond to care for them. But as her health declined, the daily demands of feeding, cleaning, and tending to their needs became more than she could handle on her own.

After struggling to find help and without reliable transportation, she contacted Columbus Humane hoping someone would listen.

“Our Field Services team immediately stepped in to help,” said Aleah Brady, chief humane agent and director of Field Services. “It was clear from the moment we arrived that she loved her animals and truly wanted the best for them.”

Situations like these often unfold gradually, especially during periods of personal hardship. Our priority was to support not only the animals, but also the person who cared for them so deeply.

Together, our team safely brought approximately 78 guinea pigs into our care, while also helping bring stability to those who remained in the home. Many of the guinea pigs were pregnant, and we knew this was only the beginning; within weeks, dozens of tiny new lives would need care, space, and support.

From the moment they arrived, our veterinary and animal care teams jumped into action, working tirelessly to examine and treat each guinea pig. Expectant mothers were gently transported to foster homes, where they could rest, feel safe, and prepare to give birth in a nurturing environment.

Back at the shelter, staff and volunteers stepped up in incredible ways, providing daily feeding, cleaning, enrichment, and much-needed socialization. Each small act of care helped these animals begin to feel safe again.

At the same time, our adoption team worked with urgency and compassion, determined to ensure that every guinea pig would have a second chance in a loving home.

Today, thanks to the support of our community, every guinea pig has been adopted.

During a final check-in, the woman hugged our humane agents and thanked them for treating both her and her pets with kindness during one of the most difficult moments of her life.

At Columbus Humane, we know that calls for help are rarely just about animals. They often come at times of illness, financial hardship, aging or unexpected life changes. In those moments, our role is not only to protect animals, but to meet people with compassion, understanding, and support.

Every day, Columbus Humane cares for animals across our community through sheltering, adoption, cruelty investigations, humane education, veterinary services, and programs designed to keep pets with the people who love them whenever possible.
