STEPS (skills, training, engagement and practice for success):

Our volunteer training process includes:

  1. STEPS Orientation and Meet & Greet (2 hours, in-person at shelter): After your one-hour informational session, we will invite you the fill out our volunteer STEPS Application and attend the STEPS Orientation. At this stage, you have been accepted as a Columbus Humane Volunteer and have begun your training! After orientation, you will have a Meet & Greet to visit with other volunteers, tour Columbus Humane, and learn how to sign-in on your first day as a volunteer. If you are interested in volunteer opportunities that do not involve handling animals, you can start volunteering regularly after the Meet and Greet.

  2. Specific Species Classes (2 Hours, in-person at shelter): Once you’ve completed Orientation and had your Meet & Greet, you can begin training in a species specific volunteer class. From dogs and cats to rabbits, you will learn specific body language by species, proper handling techniques, enrichment activities, and so much more.

  3. Mentoring Sessions (2 Hours per session, in-person at shelter): Now that you’ve learned the ins and outs to volunteering with specific species at Columbus Humane, it’s time for hands-on learning and experiences! We will have you complete mentoring sessions where you’ll continue to learn and finalize your training.

  4. Graduation! You are an OFFICIAL volunteer with Columbus Humane. Woo hoo!

Estimated time of complete: 6 Hours total

The STEPS program is proudly sponsored by Schoedinger Pet Services.  Thanks to their support, each STEPS class participant receives a training manual, photo ID badge and volunteer t-shirt. We ask all incoming volunteers to make a one-time mission investment of $30.

Opportunities for those seeking service hours outside of becoming a volunteer are minimal and limited. Court ordered service hours cannot be completed at this location. If you have any questions, please email us at volunteer@columbushumane.org.
